The Boring Work is a media project about self-improvement that survives contact with real life. No hacks, no gurus, no five-minute transformations — systems, sources, and honest testing.
Why “boring”?
Because boring is what works. Motivation fades and hacks break; consistency, systems and repetition compound over years. The self-improvement industry sells fireworks. We document the unglamorous work that actually moves the needle — and we say so when something popular does not.
How we work
- Sources, not vibes. Every factual claim links to research or a primary source. No “studies show” without the study.
- Criticism included. Our Book Notes tell you what held up and what was refuted after publication — even for books we love.
- Field-tested. Methods get tried in reality — including ultramarathons and multi-year habit experiments — before we recommend them.
- Honest limits. Every guide includes when it will not work and when the right answer is a professional, not an article.
- Commercial hygiene. At most one clearly disclosed commercial element per article. Trust is the product; we do not spend it on banners.
Who runs this
The project was founded in 2007 by Roman Kalugin as a Russian-language self-development blog, and relaunched in 2026 as The Boring Work. The original Russian-language archive remains available at /ru/.
